Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt was on during the night shift as nurse so she could follow her passion of theater and literature during the day. DuVernay quickly became enthralled when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father was able to recall seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create an animated film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective.
